Morocco. Foreign trade in figures


Morocco is experiencing steady economic growth, with a 3.1% annual GDP growth on average, during the period 2015-2019. GDP reached $119.7 billion in 2019 and GDP per capita (PPP) stood at $3,204. Morocco was the 61st largest exporting economy in 2020, with a total of $27.7 billion (source: ITC).

 

Behind Oman (60) with $30.8 billion and followed by Egypt (62) with $26.8 billion. The countries within its geographical area of influence like Spain, Algeria and Tunisia were placed in positions 19th, 67th and 76th respectively.

 

During the period 2016-2020, exports increased at an average annual rate of 5.3%. Imports reached $44.5 billion in 2020. The trade deficit stood at -$16.8 billion.

 

In 2020, the top 5 Moroccan exports with 37% out of the total, were:

  • 10% Mineral or chemical fertilisers containing two or three of the fertilising elements nitrogen
  • 10% Insulated “incl. enamelled or anodised” wire, cable “incl. coaxial cable” and other insulated
  • 10% Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons
  • 4% Diphosphorus pentaoxide; phosphoric acid; polyphosphoric acids, whether or not chemically defined
  • 3% Women’s or girls’ suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, dresses, skirts, divided skirts, trousers

 

The main destinations for Moroccan exports (2020) were:

  1. Spain 23.9%
  2. France 21.9%
  3. Italy 4.4%
  4. India 4.3%
  5. Brazil 4.1%

 

The following 5 product groups represent 16% out of total Moroccan imports during 2020:

  • 6% Petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (excluding crude)
  • 3% Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons
  • 3% Wheat and meslin
  • 2% Petroleum gas and other gaseous hydrocarbons
  • 2% Parts and accessories for tractors, motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons

 

In 2020, imports classified by country of origin:

  1. Spain 15.2%
  2. China 12.2%
  3. France 12%
  4. United States of America 6.3%
  5. Turkey 5.5%

 

Its main trading partners (X+M) are:

  1. Spain 19%
  2. France 16%
  3. China 8%
  4. United States of America 5%

 

The “Ease of Doing Business 2020 report”, ranks Morocco 53 out of 190 countries. Before Morocco are ranked Croatia (51) and Hungary (52) and behind Cyprus (54) and Romania (55).

 

The population reached 36.47 million inhabitants. The urban population is 63%. The biggest cities are:

  1. Casablanca 3.75 million inhabitants
  2. Rabat 1.88 million inhabitants
  3. Fès 1.22 million inhabitants
  4. Tangier 1.19 million inhabitants
  5. Marrakesh 1 million inhabitants
